The most reliable homeowner test is simple: add water to the sump pit and watch what happens. Choose a dry day when you can observe the discharge point outside. Avoid testing during a storm or when the pit is already filling quickly.

Start by making sure the pump is plugged into a working outlet and its power cord is not damaged. If the outlet is protected by a GFCI, confirm it has not tripped. The exact runtime depends on the pump size, the amount of water entering the pit, and the height and length of the discharge pipe. A pump may run longer when it has to push water uphill or through a long line. What matters is whether the water level is going down and whether the pump can keep up.

After the pit empties to its normal level, the pump should turn off. A pump that runs continuously after the water is gone may have a stuck float, a check-valve problem, or a setup issue. Continuous operation can wear out the motor and raise your electric bill.

Warning Signs Your Sump Pump Needs Attention

A water test is valuable, but homeowners often notice warning signs between tests. These signs deserve attention before the next period of heavy rain:

Likewise, a pump that works properly cannot solve water entering through cracks, poorly managed roof runoff, or pressure building against basement walls.

Check the Float, Pit, and Discharge Line

The float switch is the part that tells the pump when to start. In many pits, debris can interfere with its movement. Make sure the float can rise and fall freely and is not tangled around a cord, wedged against the pit wall, or trapped beneath the pump piping.

Look into the pit for loose dirt, gravel, sediment, or other debris. A small amount of residue may be normal, but significant buildup can clog the intake screen or affect the float. Never reach into a plugged-in sump pit. Disconnect power before any close inspection, and contact a professional if the pump needs to be removed or cleaned.
